Diamond Cove is the island's small private residential community, formerly a military base built during America's Gilded Age. Army structures that were once scattered over the land have been restored and are now homes with wonderful historic detail and character. Before being an army base, Diamond Cove was a famous artists' retreat where American literary greats such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Harriet Beecher Stowe spent time.
